On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Japanese Calligraphy Workshop was held at the International Commons on the 1st floor of Building 7 on the Aoyama Campus.

We welcomed Haru Sensei of “Kaki-gokoro” as the instructor. Besides his story and experiences of Shodo, he gave a mini lecture on Japanese calligraphy and performed a calligraphy demonstration at the end. Accompanied by the resonant sounds of the shamisen, he drew the character for “Cho-sen (Challenge)” in large strokes on a large sheet of paper.
We moved on to the time for the participants to experience Japanese calligraphy. Many participants were experiencing calligraphy for the first time, and some initially struggled with writing characters using a brush. Haru Sensei then write samples of the character they wished to write, so that they practiced writing that character repeatedly, imitating the examples. Finally, the participants performed Shodo on a square card together with the music behind. The students wrote their names, favorite characters or words on the card, and each completed a wonderful, unique piece. It was a memorable time for all participants.

Approximately 25 students, including international and regular students, participated in the workshop and learned about Japanese culture through Japanese calligraphy.
